在哈佛大学组织的第一场禅修活动
First meditation event organised at Harvard University
最近在和同修们一起学习一部非常有代表性的中国禅宗著作《大珠和尚顿悟入道要门》,每周两次,学了好多好多周了,一句句地讲解,一段段地学习,都挺开心的。
Recently, I have been studying a very representative Chinese Zen work, ‘Monk Dazhu’s Essentials of Enlightenment and Entry into the Way’, with my fellow students, twice a week, for many, many weeks, explaining sentence by sentence, studying paragraph by paragraph, and all quite happy.
但是,有一位参与学习的老师忽然发出了灵魂拷问:“小四子同学,既然是顿悟,为什么你却讲了这么多,讲了这么久?”
However, one of the classmates participating in the discussion suddenly posed a soul-searching question: “Xiao Si, if it is truly enlightenment, why have you spoken so much and for so long?
”你看看,这是一个多么振聋发聩的问题啊,单刀直入,直指人心,切中要害。
Look at it, what a deafening question, single-handed, straight to the heart, to the point.
是的,只要落入语言文字,就是现象,就是葛藤,就是口舌,就是无奈。只有离心意识,离一切语言文字,离一切起心动念,才行。
Yes, as long as one falls into language and words, one is a layman, a phenomenon, a kudzu, a tongue, a helplessness. Only when you are centrifugally conscious, away from all language and words, away from all starting thoughts, can you do it.
我学习了二百多天的英语,很惭愧,学了个片儿汤二五眼,根本就不足以进行简单的对话,但这个时候,刚刚好,可以绕过语言文字,体悟绝言绝虑。
I have studied English for more than 200 days, and I feel ashamed that I’ve only achieved a mediocre level — not even enough for simple conversations. But at this moment, it turns out to be just right, as I can bypass language and words to experience pure understanding beyond expression and thought.
对于不会中文的美国人,这个时候,也是刚刚好,可以绕开语言文字,直接体会绝言绝虑。
For Americans who do not know Chinese, this time, also just right, can bypass the language text, directly experience the absolute words absolute anxiety.
会中文的,也刚刚好,可以顺着语言文字的指向,去体会绝言绝虑。
For those who know Chinese, it is also just the right time to bypass the words and experience the absolute words.
中文、英文都会的,也刚刚好。
Those who know both Chinese and English are also just right.
体会到绝言绝虑,就体会到从来就没有什么不好。
If you can experience the absolute words, you will realise that there is never anything wrong with them.
体会不到,也没关系,还有止观禅,通过对呼吸的观察,数、随、止、观、还、净,步骤明确,方向清晰。
If you can’t experience it, it doesn’t matter, there’s still the Zen of stopping and observing, through the observation of the breath, counting, following, stopping, observing, returning, and purifying, the steps are clear, and the direction is clear.
当然,说“体会不到”是错误的,因为根本就不需要什么“体会”,这个动词是多余的,是错觉,是妄想,本来就是,还体会什么呢?
Of course, it’s wrong to say ‘can’t experience’ because there is no need to ‘experience’ anything at all. This verb is superfluous, it’s an illusion, it’s a delusion, it’s already there, so what’s the point of experiencing it?
世间所有的学习都是直接告诉我们,或者暗示我们,我们不好,我们不行,所以才要学习,而禅修则是掰开揉碎地告诉我们,一切关于禅修的方法、步骤、过程、乃至努力,都是为了帮助我们确认,本自具足,本来就是最美好的存在,这个事实。
All the learning in the world is to tell us directly, or to imply that we are not good, we can’t do it, that’s why we need to learn, while meditation is to tell us in a broken way, all the methods, steps, processes, and even the efforts of meditation, are all to help us to confirm the fact that we are self-sufficient, and that this is the best existence.
